High Time to Legalize?
Have you ever wondered which states have made marijuana legal for medical use? What about where marijuana use has been decriminalized? The following map illustrates which states have passed more progressive marijuana-related legislature, and offers insight to the prevalence and associated costs of marijuana-related offenses. There has been a lot of discussion lately about the revenue that could be created if marijuana production and sale were legalized and taxed, as well as the money that could be saved by not prosecuting marijuana-related offenses. In an economy such as this, the argument for legalization is seeming more level-headed than ever:

It’s about that time our government stopped dismissing marijuana as a criminal activity. The growing % of users is astounding and they need to recognize that.
It’s about time that the government is realizing that marijuana is less harmful and less addictive than alcohol or tobacco.
One day we will actually have freedom in this country!
speechless….12,000,000,000
Talk about a picture worth a thousand words…

Maybe it is time to legalize it.
If so, I hope we’re not too stoned to figure out how to release all the poor souls whose lives and families have been ruined by the draconian laws and punishments for cannabis use.
Interesting, however California has not decriminalized marijuana. It’s a 200 ticket – despite being a misdemeanor, it’s no more legal than my favorite parking space (anywhere which is going to be swept in the next hour).
Great infograph. Thanks!
hey,
Society’s had pot for over 2000 years before prohibition ruined everyone’s fun.
Anyway, why should someone be terminal just to enjoy getting high? Power trips from authorities, keeping the population down and criminalizing everyone means they aren’t going to be in ANY position to make positive change.
Compliant slaves who are afraid to go out in society and enjoy smoking too.
Every 9-5 worker should have that right. How else would you go to work and put up /w the bosses bs?
Also, better then drinking and driving and can be good for hard drug users to “gear down” to less harmful drugs, like pot or something stronger like booze.
In any case EVERYONE should be able to carry small amounts w/o medical notes and needing to pretend they are ill to enjoy it’s benefits.
I feel for those who ARE ill and not allowed (and can’t find someone b/c of that anyways)
…still 1st post?
In my opinion, Mr. Obama should work through all the red tape and legalize it. This prohibition has been going on long enough. Ending it would save the federal government several billion dollars; which in this current time is a lot of money, due to our current economic status.
Map is incorrect. NH is medial legal.
Appreciate your excellent piece of work…hoping you will keep the map, states, and stats, updated…it’s a very nice resource

Michigan has not decriminalized pot, just made medical stuff legal. There are a few cities here that have decriminalized, but jail time is still on the table for simple possession.
Why is Mississippi marked as decriminalized? The penalty for a bong is 6 months.
“Why is Mississippi marked as decriminalized? The penalty for a bong is 6 months.”
is that white or black with a bong?
Other variant is possible also
Neat thoughts noted here and I enjoy your take on things. One thing I have thought is what we think about is 100% what we become. We create our own reality.
